.......Ogugu, Ogene-oforachi, Imane, Emododa, Okpo and others, were the affected communites.

Sen Isah Jibrin, on Tuesday at the Senate chamber, moved motion for " URGENT NEED FOR REHABILITATION OF COMMUNITIES AFFECTED BY RAINSTORM IN OLAMABORO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF KOGI STATE THROUGH PROVISION OF RELIEF MATERIALS, RESIDENTIAL, EDUCATIONAL, HEALTH AND OTHER FACILITIES"

The Lawmaker in the motion, noted that the local government with it's headquarters in Okpo covers about 1,23km and has a population of about 213, 900, with farming as the major occupation of the people.

He worries that with the commencement of rain, over 200 residential buildings were destroyed across many communities in a rainstorm, following a heavy downpour on 9th of April, 2021. Apart from the destruction of residential buildings, the devastating rainstorm also ravaged crops, farmlands, schools, worship houses, bussineses and clinics in several Villages in the local government.

According to the Senator, " many victims of the disaster sustained varying degrees of injuries and are receiving medical attention at various health centres within the LGA and neighbouring LGAs" he worried.

The disaster creates serious humanitarian crises as families are rendered homeless and their means of livelihood and properties worth millions destroyed by the rainstorm".

Echocho while presenting the motion at the plenary, mentioned affected communities for ease of intervention; Ogene-oforachi, Ogugu-central, Imane communities, Emododa, Emonoja-Aludu, Adupi- Emoriko in Ogugu district and other communites within Okpo axis.

The Senate accordingly, resolved to mandate committee on Special Duties, to laise with the National Emergency Management Agency, to urgently supply relief and rehabilitation materials to the communites affected, to mitigate the suffering of the victims.

The Senate equally mandate the Committee on Poverty Alleviation and social investment programme (SIP), to laise with the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, to provide minimal capital for the victims in the affected communites, to facilitate their various economic activities.

The Committees to report back to the Senate within two weeks.

It should be recalled that, Distinguished Sen Isah Jibrin (Echocho), through similar motion, provided soccur to the displaced persons/communites in Bassa local government in early 2020.
