For over four decades of its conception and existence, as Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital (GSH), as it was formerly called, but now University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH),was the only tertiary Health institution in existence in the North Central, before the advent of others, as a result of resolve and exigency of demands on government policies on Health for all by the 2000.

Before it's elevation, little or no attention was paid in line with the context of its establishment,as so much attention was given to succession policy, rather than proactively thinking on the same page with the authorities that brought the singular idea of a centralized tertiary Health institution, that will serve not only the Northern region, but the entire Nation, at it's conception with an improved Health attention.

By mid 1990's, when the need to elevate the Health institution was mooted, the facilities on ground could not compete favorably with the new nomenclature, even after the proliferation of sister institutions scattered all round both Northern states and across the country.

Successive government's and administrations in the Hospital paid little or no attention to upgrade the critical facilities in tandem with the new status, even though others made frantic efforts that could not yield any tangible results, to ensure it measured greatly interms of personel, facilities, equipment, and other critical areas of the establishment.

Between 2008-2016 when a Neurologist, senior consultant and renowned medical expert,Dr Peter Alabi was appointed as Chief Medical Director (CMD), by late President Umar Musa Yar'adua,it marks the beginning of a major turn around of all the facilities in the Hospital, with the most critical ones attended to in order of priority.

Alabi's appointment was a major milestone to the rapid development of the many decades tertiary Health institution,as an insider that was conversant with both immediate and operational hazzles of the Hospital.

He took over an under funded establishment where there was complete near system collapse, that deserve a major overhaul of all the areas through a well thought policy statements.

At his ascension he was confronted with the dearth of Medical personnel and embarked on major appointments/employment of all cadre of Medical staffs from Doctors,Nurses,Laboratory staff and Pharmacist to improve the services of the Hospital, even though confronted with a poor and filthy environment, including the wards, offices and worst of all, the Mortuary.

He embarked on major renovation of offices and the Laboratory as well as construction of new Mortuary to bridge the unfit and age long one being utilised by the Health institution.

Dr Alabi whose tenure revolve round employments of qualified personnel, provision of drugs and sound financial discipline and control, did not hesitate to put all these into proper perspective.

Alabi, until his appointment as the Chief Medical Director, found the Hospital confronted with lack of accommodation for senior consultants and senior registered medical officers, not untill he embarked on a structure that is currently housing both consultants in the hospital, visiting ones both from within and outside the shores of Nigeria.

Similar crises also characterize the activities of House officers on Houseman ship, and others on internship like Pharmacists in the Hospital, which led to many Universities not deploying their medical students for internship/Houseman ship,as there were no befitting accommodation for House officers and Pharmacists on internship program.

Dr Alabi embarked on major renovation and construction of new accommodation to house the Medical personnel in the premises of the Hospital, so as not to expose them to all forms of security threats.

This was followed by the construction of new General Out Patient Department (GOPD),that provided enough arrangement for visiting patients first point of call, and more office accommodation to the influx of consultants into the Hospital.

Alabi's zeal to curb corruption and financial discipline led to the streamlining of financial transactions into a one single platform, to avoid sharp practices on the acocunts of the Hospital and control the revenue to the Hospital..

In that vein,he engaged new security outfit, new supporting staff and cleaners outsourced through a private company to manage both security of lives and properties in the Hospital,as well as equipment and other critical areas of the tertiary Health institution.

This is different from provision of pipe borne water, construction of Boreholes, and light to the Hospital by connecting the 33KVA line from the airport and acquired more stand by generators to complement the old and refurbished ones.

He also gave a face lift to the Hospital Rest/Guest house for visitors,as a story building was constructed to house visitors to the Health institution, either on routine or patients relatives.

During his stint and soon after addressing the basic requirements of the Hospital from personnel, professionals, structures, drugs and Manpower, the former CMD embarked on a gigantic project and built a Trauma Centre, privately ran in the Hospital,as a model to subsequent migration of the entire facets of the Hospital to the model process.

The magnificent three story structure was put in place to replicate internationals Health standard in Nigeria, as it's services was wholly separated from the main stream of the Hospital, with a highly digitalis ed process and specialized attention,a replica of a new concept in UATH,Gwagwalada.

The two institutions within the premises, School of Nursing and Midwifery including the post basic program was closely monitored to produce quality and qualified Nurses, and other who intend to specialize in the Post basic Programs.

The massive renovation, reconstruction, rehabilitation and repairs sustained for eight years by the leadership of Dr Alabi, saw the Hospital competing with it's counterparts like the University of Ibadan Teaching Hospital, Zaria,Bauchi,Kano and Sokoto with high refererals from all parts of the country.

Post-Graduate Medical college and college of medicine attached to the Teaching Hospital was not left out of the major reforms carried out by the former Chief Medical Director of the institution.

Alabi's tenure at the institution was a glorious period and transition from obsolete, non functional, demoralized personal to a reposition entity, that almost went into Oblivion, for obvious reasons of lack of will and managerial gap.

No wonder the current management toe the same feat to achieve more to the betterment of the Hospital.

Alabi after leaving as the CMD returned to his department as a world class neuron surgeon consultant in the same Hospital, showed a lot of commitment and willingness to continue to partner with the current leadership to maintain the success already achieved.

This unique show of commitment and patriotism is an indication that the former CMD, will be readily available to serve the country in another or any higher capacity,as his few years achievements and turn around of the tertiary Health institution living on it's past glory, had become a reference point.

In Dr Alabi,we have seen a highly dedicated leader whose leadership style will still be needed in other areas of our National life, for obvious reasons of his meritorious and selfless Services.
