Professor Seidu Onailo Mohammed has advocated technology as driver for sustainable development in Kogi State in view of the development need of the State, and the commitment of the present administration.
Prof. S.O Mohammed said this on Wednesday at Anyigba while delivering a lecture at Igala Round Table/Grand Reception in honour of the Executive Governor of Kogi state, His Excellency, Alhaji Yahaya A. Bello and the Deputy Governor, his Excellency, Chief Edward David Onoja.

He maintained that the technological revolutions of the 21st century are emerging from entirely new sectors, such as Space Technology, Bio-technology, Genetic Engineering, Nano-technology, Alternative fuel and energy systems, adding that, they can be more crucial than natural resources and financial capital.

“Technology is the main driver of sustainable national development, and it can be referred to be more crucial than even the natural resources and financial capital in modern development and production cycle.”
‘’Nanotechnology now play key roles in tackling many of survival issues ranging from fresh water supply and food decontamination to green technology”, he added.

Prof S. O Mohammed, the professor of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System also described science and technology as a cornerstone for economic survival of every nation.

“Today, man’s life and survival depend more on scientific and technological development than any time in the history of mankind. The reality of this dependence is the cornerstone of the new concept of “globalization” of the post-modern era of the 21st century.”

The former Space Boss further stressed the need for effective human and natural resources management through sustainable exploration and exploitation of the state’s vast resources as panacea to poverty and unemployment in the state.

“The sustainable development of a nation is about ‘effective human and natural resources management at present, and with sufficiency for the future’. Job creation and poverty reduction in Kogi State is achievable with sustainable exploration and exploitation of its vast human and natural resources that abound in the state.”

While alluding Uber’s success in the transport industry without owning a car, Prof. S.O Mohammed said the surge in tech revolution was capable of replacing crude ways of operation as many nontechnical individuals may phase out of job in the nearest future.

“In 1998, there were about 170,000 employees working in Kodak and they used to sell 85% of the world's photo paper. In a few years, digital photography drove them out of the market as Kodak went bankrupt and all his employees became unemployed.”

“Have you ever seen a high street store called Amazon, yet Amazon is the largest retail shop in the world.”

“There may be no work left for young lawyers in the USA in the nearest future, because IBM Watson software gives better Legal Advice in a moment because they use algorithms to reach a decision. In the next 10 years, 90% of US lawyers will become unemployed (the outstanding 10% will be the Super Specialists)”

“Similarly, a software named Watson performs Cancer Diagnosis 4 times more accurately than human Doctors. By 2030, computers maybe be more intelligent than humans through Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and Augmented Reality (AR).”

“In the next 30 years, 90% of the cars will disappear from the roads around the world; surviving cars will be Electric or Hybrid Cars, as Petrol consumption will decrease by 90%”.

In order to move Kogi State from the back-end of development to the first 5-front liners in Nigeria, the renowned professor recommended the following technology-driven development initiatives: Creating an industrial cluster in a duty-free zone that attracts international investors, Ajaokuta/Itobe Industrial Cluster, Lokoja/Obajana Industrial Cluster and Road Realignment.

He also proposed Business/Technology Incubation Centres (TICs) aimed at encouraging small scale entrepreneurs in the state, particularly in core areas with comparative advantages among others, calling for adoption of NASENI-made cassava flour processing plant for farmers and cooperatives.

While calling on government to give good attention to improved bio-resources varieties from BIODEC, Prof. S. O Mohammed also sued for Establishment of palm plantation and Cashew Processing Plant in selected locations in Kogi State.

“It is estimated that, about 400, 000 metric tonnes of cashew are produced annually in Kogi State, out of which about 60% of the cashew is processed into intermediate products, such as cashew kernels, by an Indian company; Olam International, while the remaining 40% is virtually wasted. The plant was inaugurated on Oct. 14, 2010, and widely described as a venture which signifies the transformation of Kogi State University into a Centre of purposeful learning and entrepreneurship.”

“The Cashew Processing Plant was established by Kogi State University in collaboration with RMRDC because of the abundant cashew available in Kogi State and neighbouring states. This should be revived and fortified to boost the industrial technology utilization of cashew in Kogi State.”
“The integration of various technologies (some outline in this paper) are necessary to produce knowledge and innovations for optimal and sustainable development of Kogi State.”

“The state must deliberately try to access the means for technology applications so as to enhance rapid development in social welfare, security, sustainable use of resources, improved socio-economic conditions for the present and future generations. “

He highlighted challenges militating against Technological prosperity in Nigeria to include, State of science education in Nigeria, Lack of enabling policies by government, International politics of technology and Inadequate investment in technology.
