Following the deplorable condition of the Abuja-Jos road, motorists have called on the Federal Government to rehabilitate the road to prevent further loss of lives and property.

DAILY NIGERIAN reports that the dilapidation of the road begins from Akwanga in Nasarawa State, to Gwantu and Gidan Waya in Kaduna State, up to Riyom in plateau State.

Commuters who spoke with DAILY NIGERIAN said that the condition of the roads was deplorable, urging the Federal Government to fast track the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the federal road
as a necessary step towards economic prosperity.

According to them, the road has the highest number of users going towards North East from the nation’s capital, Abuja.

“Potholes have taken significant part of the road with multiple ditches in almost every three kilometres of the road,” one of the road users, who simply identified himself as Aloma, said.
Our correspondent observed that motorists use one lane in Jagindi area of Jama’a local government area of Kaduna State, due to the deplorable condition of the road.

Also, in Kuru area of Riyom local government area of Plateau State, road users use one lane along the rail crossing.

Some passengers who spoke to our correspondent urged federal government to fix the  failed section of the Abuja  – Jos road, saying that it took them almost one and a half hour between Forest and Jos, which is just about 40 minutes when the road is good.

Ibrahim Saleh, whose vehicle felled into a ditch in Riyom called on federal government to decentralize the activities of federal road maintenance agency FERMA for efficiency.

Mr Saleh said the road has outlived its lifespan and needed to be totally reconstructed.

John Festus, a commercial driver said that the Federal Government needed to expedite action on the roads in view of their glaring relevance and economic importance to the country.

Checks by this newspaper along the road show an increase in vehicular breakdown due to failed potion of the road along Riyom, Forest, among others.

Sadiq Bawa, an official of the National Association of Road Transport Owners, NARTO, in Gwantu urged both the state and federal government to rescue the road for its economic importance.
