As the race for Lugard House gather momentum with the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC set for its primary election, the ultimate desires of the people of Kogi state is for the party’s leadership to ensure the emergence of a credible flag bearer that will guarantee victory for the party come November 16 and deliver the state from the valley of starvation, unemployment, poverty, insecurity and unpaid salaries.

With the incumbent governor in the race and who is not certain of having a free ride during the primary election due to what some political pundits described as his abysmal leadership style which he has allegedly displayed for almost four years , Prof. Seidu Onailo Mohammed is one of the most favoured aspirants who have recorded numerous success stories during his 36 years of public service and 11 years of holding sway as the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of National Space Research and Development Agency. To a lot of Kogites, he is the most qualified for the ticket.

Professor Mohammed, who is passionate about the welfar his people and the infrastructural development of Kogi State through a firm policy of technology and innovation for economic diversification, has developed a workable social and economic development blue print which he described as a next level document for economic revival of the state.

But what made this erudite professor of Space Science and Technology stands out amongst other aspirants is his passion for the development of the state through sound leadership that is people oriented.
William Shakespeare, the renowned English Poet, playwright and writer, once said that, “Some are born great, some achieve greatness and others have greatness thrust upon them.”

These thoughtful inspirational lines rightly encapsulate the life of a humble and intelligent leader like Professor Mohammed who garnered the courage of seeing a bright future through determination and unwavering commitment to living a life that would culminate to changing the trajectory of fortunes both for himself, his family, his community and the country at large.

A shrewd leader per excellence, an astute administrator and a dexterous scientific thinker, Professor Mohammed, is the immediate past Director General/Chief Executive Officer (DG/CEO) of National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA).

He hails from Abejukolo, Omala Local Government Area of Kogi state and was born to a humble family of Alhaji Onailo Mohammed, and Hajia Habiba Onailo Mohammed.

Satisfying his voracious quest for knowledge acquisition, Professor Mohammed was enrolled at the Native Authority Primary School, Abejukolo in 1956 where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate in 1972.

Not willing to rest on his then juvenile oars, Professor Mohammed gained admission to St. Charles College, Ankpa, Kogi State, Nigeria in 1973 and graduated in 1977 having obtained his WAEC/GCE. He however, graduated as one of the best students of the year.

In furtherance of his educational pursuit, Professor Mohammed was admitted into the Federal College of Land Resources Technology, Kuru, Jos, Plateau State between 1979 and 1984 where he obtained Higher National Diploma (HND) in Soil and Water Conservation.

With a relentless determination to reaching the apogee of his educational career, between 1987 and 1988, Professor Mohammed attended the International Institute for Geo-Information and Earth Observation (ITC) Twente University, Enschede, The Netherlands, for a Post Graduate Diploma in Soil Survey/Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System.

Thereafter, almost four years later, he further accelerated his educational pursuit by returning back to International Institute for Geo-Information and Earth Observation (ITC) Twente University, Enschede, the Netherlands between 1992 and 1993 for a Master Degree in Soil Survey/Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System.

Upon completion of his Master Degree programme, Professor Seidu who sensed the need to be managerially equipped, having leaped into the future and saw the prospect of being actively involved in managerial positions; he was again admitted to the University of Jos, Plateau state between 1994 and 1998 for a post Graduate Diploma in Management.

Still in hunt of knowledge, in 1999 he attended Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun, Uttah Pradesh Province, India where he did another Post Graduate Certificate Course in Land Use Planning and Remote Sensing.

As an avid reader and enthusiastic scholar, Professor Mohammed proceeded to Bayero University, Kano between 1999 and 2004 where he obtained his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) degree programme in Environmental Remote Sensing.

Professor Mohammed, an ardent scholar of international repute and a premiere Space Scientist in Africa with over 55 scholarly publications to his credit, fully became a Professor of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System in 2013 at the Geography Department, Kaduna State University.

Some good qualities that are noticeable with Professor Mohammed from his tender age and which grew to be part of his adult life are, deep humility, meekness, and creative way of approaching issues. Apart from being a good listener, the erudite Professor of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System is also known as a man of few words.

Surprisingly however, one would expect that a humane scholar like Professor Mohammed who is a visiting Professor to Kaduna State University and Nigeria Defence Academy would have remained within the confine of the Ivory Tower but for tint of hard work and fate, he has been able to combine lecturing with public service aimed at contributing his quota to nation building.

However, apart from being the Director General of National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), a position he held for 11 years, Professor Mohammed also served the country in other leadership capacities.

He is prersently a member, Nigeria Academy of Space Science and Technology. He was the Chairman, Steering Committee, African Leadership in Space an Advisory Committee to African Union and an Observer to United Nation Committee of the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space
Professor Mohammed was the Chairman, Governing Board of African Regional Centre for Space Technology in English Language, Ile-Ife, the position he held from 2009 till 2019.

An illustrious and goal getting man, Professor Mohammed, was also the Chairman, Board of Directors of GeoApps + Limited, Abuja, a Federal Government company for the commercialization of earth Observation Satellite between 2013 and 2019.

The down-to-earth Professor, who briefly returned to his state of origin to contribute his quota to the development of the state, also served between 2004 and 2006 as the Director General, Kogi state Directorate of Rural Development.
He was NASRDA’s Deputy Director, Space Application between 2000 and 2003 and between 2006 and 2007 he was the Managing Director, Nigeria Satellite Imageries and Consultancy, Ltd, NASRDA.

He however, grew through the ranks to become the Director/Chief Executive Officer of National Centre for Remote Sensing (NCRS), Jos, the position he gloriously held between 2007 and 2008 until his appointment as the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NASRDA .

He also served as a senior lecturer in the department of Geology, University of Jos from 2007-2009 and he is presently a visiting Professor to Kaduna State University and Nigeria Defence Academy.
Professor Mohammed, the adroit scientist, was Chief Scientific Officer, Head of Applications Department, National Centre for Remote Sensing, Jos from 1994 to 2000 among other notable positions he has held while serving the nation.

Peter Drucke may have rightly posited when he said that, “Effective leadership is not about making speeches or being liked; leadership is defined by results not attributes.” It is glaring to note that, Professor Mohammed is such a leader who has been able to bring life and hope as well as desired results to bear following the various achievements he has recorded in all the positions he has occupied so far.

Professor Mohammed always maintains that “The best way to proffer solution to the problems on the land is through the space science and technology. We need to train our men and women to acquire requisite skills required to put the country in the world map of space revolutionaries,”

Until his appointment as the Director General of the country’s space agency, Professor Mohammed,
only met seven staff with PhD qualifications but his visionary leadership drive and his quest for indigenous Professionals manning the various departments and units within the agency has added several other personnel with higher degrees as the agency could boast of having 218 Ph.D. holders and over 700 M.sc holders as at the time of his retirement in July, 2019, which is a testament to his apparent commitment to capacity building.

He collaborated with Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun and Chicago University in USA for various research endeavors in environmental and space science technology.

Over the years, he has made significant contributions to the development of models for desertification assessment and predictions in the North Eastern region of Nigeria. This model has been applied by the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) as well as other Nigerian institutions in studying the menace of desertification in the country. The model is currently being used to study the green belt region in West Africa.

Under the superintendence of Professor Mohammed, NASRDA successfully built, developed, and launched an indigenously processed satellite into the orbit, the first of its kind in the history of Nigeria. The satellite is code named as Nigeria-Sat-X, a feat that has made Nigeria an exporter of derivable products of space technology rather than being a mere importer and consumer of same.

Professor Mohammed, is an award winning scientist and is a member to many Professional bodies which include, Nigerian Geo-information Society (NGS), Association of American Geographers (AAG), African Association of Remote Sensing of Environment (AARSE), International Research and Development Institute (IRDI) and he also a Fellow at Nigeria Association of Radio and Planetary Sciences (NARPS), Astronomical Society of Nigeria (ASN), Institute of Credit Administration (ICA) and International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) and currently on the governing Board.

Professor Mohammed is happily married with lovely children and if he is not reading and undertaking research, you may find him watching football and productive scientific and progressive thinking.
