On the 1st of October, 1996, a Military dictator, Late General Sani Abacha announced the creation of Igalamela Local Government. For a long time after this announcement, it was not clear the geographical area of the new Local Government.

The people of Odolu comprising Odolu, Akpanya and Avrugo districts did not actually know where they belonged. From the old Idah Local Government Area, two new Local Government Areas of Ibaji and Igalamela were carved out.

When it became clear that Odolu belong to Igalamela Local Government Area, the people protested over the fact that the seat of Government (the Local Government Headquarters) at Ajaka was too far from them.

A review of the Local Government creation exercise finally integrated Odolu into the new Igalamela Local Government Area. Hence, the new name " Igalamela/Odolu Local Government Area ". So, on 4th December, 1996 Igalamela/Odolu Local Government Area was created as one of the 774 Local Government Areas in Nigeria.

The Local Government covers an area of about two thousand square kilometres. The River Mabolo and the Northern and Southern Odolu forest reserve formed the natural boundary between Igalamela and Odolu.
The Local Government shares common boundaries with Ofu and Olamaboro Local Government Areas in the South-west, Ibaji Local Government Area in the South and Enugu and Anambra States in the East.

The vegetation of the area is essentially Guinea Savannah and the rain forest. The soil type consists of Sandy, humus and clay soil. The drainage system consists of River Mabolo, and other rivulets that drain into it, like Okura, Ubelle, Oda and Owe.

At the apex of the administrative structure of the Local Government is the Executive chairman. Under the democratic system of government in operation in Nigeria, the chairman/administrator is the executive officer of the Local Government.

On the other hand, the legislative arm of the Local government council is constituted by the democratically elected councilors.
